How Posture Affects The Body...Minneapolis Chiropractor
Everyone knows that poor posture can lead to neck and shoulder ache, but recent research shows that incorrect posture can also take a toll on our mood, energy and thoughts as well.
Posture & Body Language
Posture can also tell a great deal of how we value ourselves--both physically and emotionally, as body language can be closely related to posture. Body language displays how we present ourselves to the world, but it also tells the world what we think about ourselves.
For example, someone who sits up straight with their chest out is generally presented as someone who is confident and ready to take the world on. And someone who has their head down to their chest and has a slouched posture tends to be viewed as insecure or depressed.
Practicing poor posture has been linked to:
- Depression
- Career problems
- Increases the risk of death and disease
- Making you look heavier
- Cutting off circulation
- Stress
Posture can Affect Your Hormones
A recent study from Harvard revealed that people who adopted correct postures (such as open shoulders and straight spines) had a 20% increase in testosterone levels and a 25% decrease in cortisol levels. However, people who slouch had a 10% decrease in testosterone and a 15% increase in cortisol.
The same study also concluded that body language representing power can actually influence our decision-making, subconsciously. Your posture can affect your mood, thoughts and even your hormones whether you're thinking about it or not.
